FALL

Dear friends,

We hope you had a lovely equinox and are transitioning gently into the cooler seasons. We are grateful to our amazing staff for their dedication, hard work and love for plants, as well as to our clients for choosing to work with us.

As we transition into Fall, this is a great time of the year to divide herbaceous perennials that have outgrown their space. We can shift them around the garden beds to fill in gaps or offer them to friends.

It is also time to plant bulbs for the Spring.

Spring Flowering Bulbs

Here are some pictures of different bulbs that we can plant at this time of the year. If you would like to order some, please let us know!

A big part of our work is to design garden space and bring them to life. We've been working on some really amazing projects this year and had the pleasure of being featured in local magazines. You can read more about our work and garden philosophy in the following garden articles: issue 4 of Boulevard Magazine (page 46), Spruce Magazine Spring 2023 issue (page 16), and Oak Bay Living's Fall 2023 Tweed Magazine (page 18).

Our garden maintenance division will be continuing lawn and garden maintenance until the end of November and then we will start mulching gardens.

Mulch/Compost

Available mulch this year:

Fish mulch: a mixture of fish (Nitrogen) and bark mulch (Carbon), good for weed suppression.
Sea Soil: consists of 50% fish and 50% forest fines. Fish are "nature's best organic fertilizer" that will break down slowly. Most expensive product and based on availability.
Leaf mulch: a lighter mulch, great to promote habitat for beneficial insects and protect from the heavy rain.
Finely screened compost (contains cow manure): heavier and denser, with the highest amount of nutrients besides sea soil.

They are all great options. Please let us know if you would like us to mulch before the holidays or in January.

After years of planning and germinating, we started our botanical gardens in Sooke growing food, medicinal herbs and nursery plants. This season we harvested our first crops of garlic, chamomile, tomatoes, peppers, raspberries and blueberries (just to name the most prolific ones)!

In our newly built greenhouse, complete with a carving above the door made by the extremely talented Chazz Elliot and Matt Parlby, we grew all the veggie starts for our clients this year.
